What is Vaniqa Cream?

Vaniqa cream is the medication especially made from Eflornithine. It is a popular topical drug that slows down hair growth in the face and around the chin of women. The medication cannot be used for hair found on the rest of the body. The cream blocks particular elements such as enzymes that facilitate hair growth. The result is it slows down hair growth and makes it lighter in colour and finer. However, the cream does not entirely remove the hair.

This is not suitable for children 12 years and younger.

How does Vaniqa Cream work?

The ingredients found in Vaniqa cream, particularly Eflornithine (Hydrochloride Monohydrate), block the production of ODC or Ornithine Decarboxylase enzyme. To produce new hair strands, the ODC enzyme is required to create Polyamines that induce rapid hair growth. Without this enzyme, the skin is incapable of creating hair. Vaniqa cream works in effectively blocking the ODC enzyme, hence slowing down the growth of hair.

What are the benefits of Vaniqa Cream?

Vaniqa cream reduces hair growth considerably in the face and the chin area which is suitable for women. It does not stop hair growth entirely or remove hair but, it slows down the growth of unwanted hair. With continued usage, the hair in the face and chin area are becoming less prominent, less coarse, and makes unwanted hair appear lighter.

Vaniqa cream should be applied twice daily, at least 8 hours apart.

Vaniqa should be used after cleaning/cleansing and before applying moisturiser, cosmetics or sun creams.

Apply a thin layer of Vaniqa cream to the affected area(s) of the face, and under the chin if required, and rub in thoroughly.

Do not wash the treated areas for at least 4 hours after application of Vaniqa to allow it to have time to have an effect.

Like all creams there is the potential that you may be allergic to Vaniqa. We recommend you do a spot test before commencing treatment. If you suffer with any reaction in the area that Vaniqa is applied, you should not use the cream.

If you do experience side effects from Vaniqa, the most common side effect are:

acne, either worsening existing acne or causing acne in just over 1 in 10 people who use Vaniqa.

Other common side effects are:

skin reactions from in growing hair, hair loss, a burning, stinging or tingling feeling, dry skin, itching, redness or rash.  Please read the Patient Information Leaflet enclosed with your medicines for a full list of side effects.
