What is Xifaxanta

Xifaxanta (Rifaximin) is a medication used to treat travellers diarrhoea that develops during, or shortly after, you have travelled abroad. Diarrhoea is defined as 'loose or watery stools, usually at least three times in 24 hours'. Travellers diarrhoea is commonly caused by eating food or drinking water containing germs (bacteria). In most cases, the symptoms are mild, and the body's immune system clears them within a few days.

Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine may only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking Xifaxanta it is important that your Doctor or Pharmacist knows:

  • If you are pregnant, trying for a baby, or breastfeeding.
  • If you have any problems with your kidneys.
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine.
  • If you are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines.

Take ONE tablet every 8 hours for THREE days.

The side-effects you may experience are, headache, dizinees, feeling sick, stomach discomfort, constipation, skin reactions and a high temperature.
